something from nothing

So, it only took me about two weeks to blog about this but I finally finished/presented my "felt dresses" project for school (previously blogged about here)! The final title of the piece was "Something from Nothing." In the end I made 77 miniature felt dresses and assembled them into one person sized shift dress. If you were to red my convoluted artist statement it would blab on in annoying art school speak about self control, self worth and compromise. Essentially the piece started as a compromise with myself wherein I didn't purchase one article of clothing for a month, instead opting to craft tiny versions of the dresses I was coveting. The piece also came to be a metaphor of some kind - by creating a human-sized garment out of seemingly worthless small bits of felt I proved to myself that with my skills (which seem completely useless to me at times) I can actually create something real, whole and valuable. Blah blah blah...here are detail shots:

If you're so inclined, you can see a few more photos as well as these guys up close and personal on my flickr.

dresses i didn't buy

photos from my midterm critique - this is a work in progress that will eventually be lots more tiny felt dresses all stitched together to make a person sized dress.
