You should wear some "safety glasses" to protect your eyes! I have an old pair of thrift store glasses without a prescription in them, and they really help when sewing crazy fabrics.
oooh, good call! i use them when i'm sewing on the industrial machines at school for fear of a needle snapping in half and taking my eye out, but i feel like i need those plus a full on SARS mask when i'm working with velvet. i've had to clean out the bobbin compartment over and over during this pesky project!
